Cowboys drop both ends of doubleheader to No. 10 Mavericks

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 10 Colorado Mesa 16-3 and 12-5 Saturday at Brandt Field.

In the first game, the Cowboys (15-30, 10-17) fell behind 9-0 in the first three innings before a Jared Brown RBI single in the third and a Joe Kuhn homer in the fourth made it 9-2. But CMU (30-9, 17-6) scored seven in the fifth to pull away.

Jose Ayala was the only NMHU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jadrian Martinez got the loss, going 4.1 innings and giving up 11 runs (only five earned) on 11 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

In the second game, the Cowboys fell behind 5-0 in the third inning before Jared Brown hit a three-run homer to make it 5-3. But CMU scored three int he fourth and two in the fifth to make it 10-3. NMHU cut the lead to 10-5 with an Aidan McNichol RBI single and a Kalen Hammer RBI single but the Mavs added two more in the seventh to make the final 12-5.

Brown finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI as the only NMHU player with multiple hits. Angel Castillo got the loss, going five innings and giving up 10 runs on 14 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

The teams conclude the series noon Sunday at Brandt Field.
