Portales, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team won its first game of the 2023-24 campaign Saturday at the South Central Region Crossover by knocking off #19 Angelo State at ENMU's Greyhound Arena.
The Cowboys trailed in the game 34-30 at halftime, put together a strong second half to defeat the nationally ranked Rams. NMHU outscored Angelo State 38-31 in the second twenty minutes shooting 44% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc.
"Really happy for our guys tonight versus a good team," said Head Coach
Mike Dominguez after the game. "We could have hung our heads after a really bad performance last night. They responded and played for each other."
AC Curry and
Kyrie Thomas each scored 14 points to lead the Cowboys.
Eric Sonnenberg added 13 points and a game high nine rebounds.
Nathan Hasberry was also in double-digits with 10 points.
New Mexico Highlands out rebounded Angelo State 40-32.
The Cowboys play their home opener on Tuesday morning hosting Northern New Mexico. Tip off for the annual Youth Day game is set for 11:15 am.
