Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team lost to Western New Mexico on a buzzer beater Wednesday evening at the Wilson Complex. The Cowboys are now 3-2 and the Mustangs improve to 2-3.
In a game that featured 13 lead changes and 18 ties, the Cowboys found themselves on the short end of the 80-79 decision.
Western New Mexico tied the score at 77 with 6.2 seconds remaining in the contest. On the ensuing possession
Tyler Rodgers drove the ball the length of the court and just missed a lay-up, but
Messiah Turner was on the spot for the put back to give NMHU a 79-77 lead with just 0.4 remaining. Western New Mexico inbounded the ball and hit a 30 foot shot to win the game.
NMHU shot 50% (31-62) from the floor for the game and shot 6 of 13 beyond the arc. Western New Mexico held a slight 30-28 edge in rebounds.
For the Cowboys,
Messiah Turner led the way with 14 points while
TJ Sanchez and
Ezichi Kalu both added 10 points.
Eric Sonnenberg scored eight points and led NMHU with seven rebounds.
The Cowboys return to action on December 1st as the open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play by hosting Colorado Christian. Tip-off at the Wilson Complex is slated for 7:00 pm.
