Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team closed out the 2023 portion of the schedule with a 66-55 win over South Dakota Mines on Saturday evening in the Wilson Complex. The win improved the Cowboys overall record to 6-5 and RMAC record is now 3-3. The Hardrockers fall to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Cowboys never trailed as they led Saturday's game wire-to-wire. The biggest lead of the opening half came at the 3:39 mark when
Rodney Mason II hit a short jumper to give NMHU a 28-17 lead. South Dakota Mines rallied late to cut the Cowboys lead to 30-26 at the break. NMHU led by as many as 13 points in the second half enroute to the 66-55 victory.
Kyrie Thomas scored a game high 19 points on Saturday night and
Rodney Mason II was also in double figures with 15 points.
Eric Sonnenberg grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys shot 46% from the floor and netted seven three point field goals on Saturday. They out rebounded the visitors 34-32.
After Saturday's win, the Cowboys now enjoy three weeks off for the holidays, returning to action on January 5th in Salt Lake City against Westminster. The next home game is on January 12th when MSU-Denver comes to Las Vegas.
