Las Vegas, New Mexico - After winning a pair of RMAC games at home last weekend, the New Mexico Highlands University men's basketball team plays its first road games of the conference season this weekend. The Cowboys are at nationally ranked Fort Lewis on Friday before traveling to Alamosa to play Adams State on Saturday.
The Skyhawks are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play so far this season with the lone blemish coming in Portales against Angelo State at the South Central Region Crossover. They are ranked 20th in the most recent NABC Division II Top 25 poll. Junior Obi Agbim leads Fort Lewis in scoring at 15.0 points per game. The Skyhawks own a +13.6 scoring margin as they put up 81.9 points per game and allow just 68.3 points per outing. Fort Lewis won the lone meeting between the two teams last season grabbing an 83-74 win in Las Vegas.
Adams State is 2-6 overall and 0-2 so far this season. The Grizzlies started 2023-24 with a pair of wins at the South Central Region Crossover over Texas-Permian Basin and Western New Mexico. The Grizzlies score 72.9 points per game while allowing 81.4 per outing. Senior Destan Wiliams leads Adams State with 17.0 points per game. The Cowboys won both games against the Grizzlies last season winning 87-73 in Las Vegas and 89-80 in Alamosa. Adams State hosts CSU-Pueblo on Friday evening.
The Cowboys enter play this weekend with an overall record of 5-2 and a 2-0 mark in the RMAC. Last Friday they defeated Colorado Christian as four Cowboys scored in double-figures. On Saturday, the Cowboys used a strong second half to defeat Chadron State 75-61. Junior
Kenard Richardson came up big in the second half scoring 17 of his team high 20 points to help pace the Cowboys.
The Cowboys return home next weekend playing host to Black Hills State on Friday and South Dakota Mines on Saturday.
