In an exciting doubleheader of softball games between the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls and the Roadrunners of Metro State University of Denver, the Cowgirls came out on top in game one while the Roadrunners won game two.
In game one, the Cowgirls got off to a strong start in the second inning when A. Ramirez hit a homer to left center, bringing in the first run of the game. However, the Roadrunners quickly responded in the third inning, with S. Robb hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing H. DiFabio to score and tying the game at 1-1.
In the same inning, Medhus singled to shortstop, advanced to second on the throw, and brought in A. Boring, giving the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead. In the sixth inning, A. Burt hit a homer down the right field line, increasing the Roadrunners' lead to 3-1.
The Cowgirls fought back in the seventh inning, with A. Midiri hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in A. Ruiz and making the score 3-2. G. Lauro then hit a single to the pitcher, bringing in G. Varela and tying the game at 3-3. D. Lincoln hit a double to left field, bringing in S. Gamboa and G. Lauro and putting the Cowgirls ahead 5-3.
The Roadrunners didn't give up, however, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, S. Robb hit a single up the middle, bringing in A. Boring and closing the gap to 5-4. But the Cowgirls held on for the win, with a final score of 5-4.
In game two, the Roadrunners came out strong and never let up. In the first inning, S. Robb hit a single up the middle, bringing in H. Difabio and giving the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead. In the second inning, A. Arellano reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second, and J. Geist scored on an error by 3b, increasing the Roadrunners' lead to 2-0.
The Roadrunners continued to dominate, with H. Difabio hitting a single to left field in the second inning and bringing in A. Arellano, increasing their lead to 3-0. In the third inning, J. Geist hit a single through the left side, bringing in J. Medhus and S. Robb and making the score 5-0.
In the fourth inning, the Roadrunners continued to add to their lead, with A. Boring hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Grammerstorf and making the score 6-0. J. Medhus then hit a single to right center, bringing in H. Difabio and increasing the Roadrunners' lead to 7-0.
The Roadrunners' final run of the game came in the fifth inning, when J. Geist hit a homer to center field, making the score 8-0. The Cowgirls were unable to score, and the game ended with a final score of 8-0 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Overall, it was an exciting doubleheader, with each team winning a game. The Cowgirls fought hard in game one and came away with the win, but the Roadrunners were unstoppable in game two, earning a decisive victory.
Both teams match up again tomorrow in Denver to conclude the Cowgirls season.
