Two podium finishes, an upset in the javelin and four track finalists, pushed the NMHU Cowgirls to third place after Day One of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track and field championships, Friday in Chadron, NE.
Chisom Obioha repeated her runner-up performance from indoors with a jump of 5.74m (18'-10") to place second.Â
"Chisom was a toenail over the board on her last jump, but they measured all jumps and it was a winning jump," noted HU head coach
Bob DeVries. "Chisom only jumped twice in the outdoor season. She worked hard with our athletic training room staff and coach Russell to be ready to go for RMAC."
Katy Scott got on the podium once again in the hammer, taking third with a throw of 50.39m (165'-4").Â
In the javelin, HU All American hurdler
Patreece Clarke upset the form chart with a big personal record. Clarke came in to the championship ranked outside the top ten, but snuck into the final in eighth position. A big 38.90m (127' 7") throw to jump from eighth to fourth in the final round.Â
"Coach Dunbar encouraged Patreece to tweak her run in the finals and it paid off with a big throw," said DeVries.
Meanwhile, on the track,
Nadine Rose (400), Cemore Donald (400) and
Beatrice Armijo (400H) all advanced to the finals and
Jewels Leslie took 14th in the 10k final after coming in ranked #22.
Also in the 400,
Lucia Harrison placed 11th-- just missing putting three Cowgirls into the final.Â
"Our 4x400 looks good right now, we had three of the top 11 in the open and Bea made me 400 hurdle final. They're ready to roll," noted DeVries.
Action continues over both Saturday and Sunday. Live results and live streaming are available on the RMAC website.
