Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands University volleyball team dropped their home opener 3-0 to Angelo State University Tuesday afternoon on the Wilson Complex.
Tuesday's match marked the first of two matches at home this season against Lone Star Conference foes, as the Cowgirls will host Western New Mexico on October 18th.
NMHU started slowly on Tuesday afternoon allowing the Rambelles to take the opening set 25-11. The Cowgirls dropped the next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20. Angelo State was among the teams receiving votes in this week's AVCA NCAA II Top 25.
For the match, Angleo State out-hit NMHU .324 to .115.
Individually,
Layla Hooks led the Cowgirls hitting .357.
Angelina Burton recorded 8 kills while
Jaylee Gonzales and
Amirah Young tallied seven apiece.
Defensively,
Abby Carlsen (12) and
Megan Waghorn (10) led NMHU in digs.
New Mexico Highlands is back on the road this weekend traveling to the 2023 Tiger Classic at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. They are scheduled to face the host Tigers and Cameron University on Friday. Saturday the Cowgirls will play Minnesota State- Mankato and Southern Nazarene.
