Grand Junction, Colorado - The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team saw its modest two game winning streak snapped on Saturday evening falling to Colorado Mesa 94-72 in Grand Junction.
The Cowboys are now 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the RMAC. Colorado Mesa, ranked 14th in the latest NABC Division II poll, improved to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
Coming out of the gate fast, the Cowboys opened up a 13 point lead in the first half when
Kyrie Thomas hit a three pointer to make the score 34-21 with 1:58 to go before the break. The hosts cut the lead to nine, 26-27 at the half. Colorado Mesa reclaimed the lead for good with 12:54 to go in the second half.
Kenard Richardson led the Cowboys with 18 points, 15 of which came in the second half.
Aahmod Scarbrough was also in double figures with 12 points in the game.Richardson was the team's leading rebounder with seven on the night.
These two teams will meet again later this season when Colorado Mesa visits Las Vegas on February 23rd.
Up next for the Cowboys is a pair of home games this coming weekend when MSU-Denver and Colorado Mines are in Las Vegas.
