Durango, Colorado - The Cowboys kicked off the 2024-25 season in thrilling fashion knocking off Angelo State 84-83 in the South Central Region Crossover.
The win is the second consecutive over the Rams to start the season after last year's win over the Rams in Portales.
Angelo State led 36-34 at the break after the teams played a back and forth opening half that had six lead changes.
NMHU took the lead for good at the 13:20 mark of the second half when
Nathan Hasberry scored on an assist from
Blessin Kimble.
The story of the night was senior
Kenard Richardson who scored a game high 34 points on 12 of 20 shooting from the floor to pace the Cowboys. He was three of six from beyond the arc, seven of nine from the free throw line and had a team high six rebounds.
Kyrie Thomas and
Nathan Hasberry scored 11 points each. Freshman
KJ LaMonte had nine points in his first collegiate outing.
Blessin Kimble had eight points and a team high three assists while
TJ Sanchez added eight points off the bench.
The Cowboys had 21 points off turnovers and 17 second chance points in the contest.
Up next, game two of the South Central Region Crossover is tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm when the Cowboys face Eastern New Mexico.
