Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands and Colorado Mesa combined for 122 second half points in a game that saw the nationally ranked Mavericks pull away for a 116-108 win Friday night at the Wilson Complex.
The Cowboys are now 10-14 overall and 7-12 in the RMAC while Colorado Mesa is 22-3 overall and 18-1 in conference play.
The two teams played an entertaining back and forth first half that saw both teams lead. The Cowboys jumped out early but saw the Mavericks take the lead for the first time at the 13:51 mark. The Cowboys clawed back and took a 32-29 lead on a
Kenard Richardson three pointer with 8:59 to go in the half. NMHU held a 53-49 lead at the break.
As the second half unfolded the Cowboys maintained the lead through the first seven minutes of action until the Mavericks took a 69-68 lead at the 14:15 mark of the second half. The two teams went back and forth for the next three minutes until Colorado Mesa took the lead for good with 10:54 to play.
Five Cowboys scored in double digits on Friday night led by
Kyrie Thomas who tallied 27 points on 10-12 shooting from the floor, a perfect five for five from three point range and two for two from the free throw line. Thomas also had four steals and three assists.
Ezichi Kalu recorded his fifth double-double of the season as he went for 17 points and 12 rebounds. Kalu also had a game high four blocked shots.
Also in double figures were
Kenard Richardson with 23 points and
Nathan Hasberry with 20 points.
Tyler Rodgers added 13 points.
