Las Vegas, New Mexico - 26 games into the 2024 campaign and the Cowboys played their home opener on Friday afternoon dropping a high scoring, extra inning contest to Colorado School of Mines 15-11 in 11 innings.
After the Orediggers scored three in the opening inning the Cowboys responded with six runs in their half of the second inning.
Lubby Marrujo got NMHU on the board when he knocked a two run double that scored
Tucker Simpson and
Richie Amavizca. Two batters later,
Gael Bernal singled home Marrujo and
Roy Pacheco.Ā The Cowboys added two more runs to build a 6-3 lead at the end of two.
The Cowboys added a run in the third, a pair of runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-3 heading into the seventh.
The Orediggers scored five in the top of the eighth and three more in the ninth to take an 11-10 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Carlos Chavez scored on a wild pitch for the Cowboys to tie the score at 11-11 and force extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Colorado School of Mines scored four runs in their half of the 11th to take the 15-11 lead.
Jadrian Martinez got the start for the Cowboys and after allowing three runs in the first inning held the Orediggers scoreless for the next five frames.
Sinhue Gonzalez took the loss in relief.
NMHU is now 6-21 overall and 2-7 in the RMAC.
Tomorrow's doubleheader is set for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
