Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls defeated Adams State in five sets on Friday night in the Wilson Complex to open the 2024 RMAC campaign in thrilling fashion. NMHU is 2-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference while Adams State moves to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.
Friday's win marks the first time that NMHU Volleyball won its home opener since 2016 when the Cowgirls beat South Dakota Mines 3-0.
The visiting Grizzlies took the set number one from the Cowgirls 25-16, this after NMHU jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. Set number two saw the Cowgirls bounce back to capture a 29-27 win. In set three NMHU took another close win 25-23. The Grizzlies forced the fifth set with a 25-16 win in set number four.
In the fifth set, Adams State took an early 2-0 lead. After trading points back and forth the Cowgirls took the lead for good 6-5 on an Adams State attack error. The Cowgirls closed out the set and the match on a kill by
Angelina Burton.
"I am just so proud of my team tonight," said
Meg Grose after the match. "Our early season work and tough matches in Texas paid off tonight."
"And our fans were so great, they gave us energy down the stretch," Grose added.
Senior
Angelina Burton recorded a career high 16 kills for the Cowgirls.
Jaylee Gonzales added 14 kills on the night. Setters
Abby Carlsen and
Francesca Carbone had 22 and 16 assists respectively.
Freshman
Olivia Archuleta had a career high 17 digs in the match. Burton and
Jada Lawson combined for seven blocks.
The Cowgirls get right back at it as they head to Colorado for a match with CSU-Pueblo tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm.
