San Angelo, Texas - The Cowgirls opened the 2024 campaign on Friday at The Kathleen Brasfield Invitational with a pair of matches against teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Division II Tournament. NMHU dropped a 3-0 decision to Angelo State and then battled Emmaneul before falling 3-2.
In the first match on Friday, Angelo State out hit the Cowgirls .315 to .129 en route to the three set victory.
For NMHU, freshman
Meg Pfannerstill led the way with eight kills while sophomores
Jaylee Gonzales and
Seraiah Morgan logged seven and six kills respectively. Defensively,
Sophia Hendricks-Montes had 15 digs.
In the day's second match the Cowgirls and Emmanuel, the 2023 Conference Carlolina's champion, battled in a five set contest with NMHU eventually falling in five. In the fourth set the Cowgirls trailed the Lions and rallied to score four of the last five points of the set to force a deciding fifth set.
Against Emmanuel,
Seraiah Morgan had 13 kills,
Aziza Morris logged 11 kills and
Angelina Burton had 10.
Abby Carlsen had career highs in assists (25) and service aces (3).
On the defensive side,
Jada Lawson had five total blocks and
Sophia Hendricks-Montes added a career high 25 digs.
The Cowgirls get back at it first thing on Saturday morning as they face UT-Permian Basin at 7:00 am (MT). In the second match of the day they face nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma at 11:00 am (MT).
