San Angelo, Texas - The Cowgirls wrapped up play at the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational on Saturday at Angelo State. NMHU dropped a 3-1 decision to UT-Permian Basin and a 3-0 contest to nationally ranked Central Oklahoma.
The day's first match got under way at just after 7:00 am New Mexico time and the Cowgirls came out slow and dropped the first two sets to the Falcons. NMHU came back and won set number three in convincing fashion but couldn't keep the momentum going as they lost set four to fall to UT-Permian Basin by the 3-1 count.
For the match the Cowgirls hit just .029. Individually,
Jaylee Gonzales had seven kills and
Angelina Burton added six kills to pace NMHU.
Sophia Hendricks-Montes had a match-high 23 digs.
Central Oklahoma, ranked 23rd this week, handed the Cowgirls a 3-0 defeat in the day's second match. The Cowgirls played well, but couldn't overcome the Bronchos.
Seraiah Morgan and
Angelina Burton led the way with eight and seven kills respectively.
After the day's matches head coach
Meg Grose said, "The weekend didn't turn out the way we wanted it to from a wins and losses stand-point, but we played some very talented teams who helped us understand how we need to compete every time we take the court."
Grose continued, "We had some really great moments and the pieces are there, we just have to work on continuing to learn and execute against tough teams."
Sophomore
Jaylee Gonzales was named to the 2024 Kathleen Brasfield Invitational after posting 25 kills, 32 digs, and four blocks in the tournament.
The Cowgirls are on the road again next weekend as they head back to Texas to play in the UT-Permian Basin Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
"We'll get back to work as a team this week and play better next weekend in Odessa," said Grose when asked about next week's tournament.
