Las Vegas, New Mexico - As the calendar turns to October, cross country season shifts into high gear with conference and regional championships on the horizon. The New Mexico Highlands University cross country teams are set to compete in a key tune-up race this Friday morning in Pueblo, Colorado, at the South Central Regional Preview. Friday's races are at the Walking Stick Golf Course - the same venue that will host the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship later this month.
Both teams posted strong performances last Friday afternoon at the 33rd edition of the HU XC Jam at Gene Torres Golf Course. For the Cowgirls
Joan Kuyo and
Summer Abeyta finished first and second respectively in the 5k event leading NMHU to a first place finish. Meanwhile,
Xavier Martinez,
James Kurui and
Weldon Chebon were the top three finishers in the Men's 7k, helping the Cowboys to the team championship.
"This week's race in Pueblo is a great opportunity for us to see the course and get used to the changes in elevation," said Coach
Bob DeVries. "It's the first time we've raced on this course and the experience should help us when we return for the Regionals at the end of the month."
Looking ahead, NMHU returns to action next Friday morning when they compete at the UCCS XC Open at Monument Valley Park, the site of the 2025 RMAC Cross Country Championships.
