Durango, Colorado - Fort Lewis used a strong second half to race past the Cowboys 88-80 on Thursday night. The loss drops the Cowboys to 1-9 overall and 1-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Skyhawks improve to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
NMHU never trailed in the first half and extended their lead to 15 points as the break approached. Their defense held the Skyhawks to 31.3% shooting from the field and just 9.1% from three-point range as the Cowboys took a 38â25 lead into the locker room.
The momentum shifted after the break, as Fort Lewis erupted for 63 second-half points, shooting 51.4% from the floor and knocking down six of fourteen attempts from beyond the arc over the final twenty minutes.
The two teams were whistled for a combined 48 fouls, with the Skyhawks going to the line 29 times and the Cowboys attempting 38 free throws.
The Skyhawks held a 37-35 edge in rebounding.Â
Dontae Walker led all scorers in the game with 23 points.
Marcus Pierce had 15 points and
BJ Comer added 14 for the Cowboys.
Nikk Williams had a team high eight rebounds.
Comer, Williams,
Caileb Parham, and
Ibrahima Sacko combined for six blocked shots, marking a season high for NMHU.
