Las Vegas, New Mexico - Late runs by Northwest Oklahoma State sank the Cowboys 7-4 in their home opener on Friday afternoon. The loss drops NMHU to 2-3 on the young season.
On a day where the winds were blowing upwards of 40 miles per hour the game had all the indications of a slugfest as both teams plated three runs in the first inning. In fact, just the opposite happened as both starting pitchers settled in and didn't allow another run for the next five innings.
The Rangers scored on in the seventh, two in the eight and another in the ninth to build a 7-3 lead going into the home half of the ninth.
The Cowboys scored one in the ninth after
Gael Bernal reached on an error and scored on a
Bryant O'Neil double. NMHU was unable to push across another run as NWOSU came away with the win.
Gael Bernal,
Benny Martinez, and
Seth Galfano each recorded a multi-hit game.
Carlos Chavez had two RBI.
Dominick Castillo got the start and went six and a third innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out two.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Gme one is set to get under way at 12:00 pm.
