Alpine, Texas - Playing short handed for much of the match, the Cowgirls scored late in the match on Thursday afternoon to defeat Sul Ross State 1-0. The win improved NMHU to 1-1-0 on the young season.
The Cowgirls lost two goalies to red cards during Thursday's match. Starter
Peyton Greener was carded for retaliation at the 37:48 mark of the first half and then a minute later
Marie-France Foguenne was given a red card after being called for a handball.
Haylee Driscoll came in and played the 51:12 final minutes of the match in goal to preserve the shutout for the Cowgirls.
With just eight position players on the field, the Cowgirls began to turn up the offensive pressure on the host Lobos late in the second half. That pressure paid off when
Adelina Villanueva found the back of the net off a corner kick from
Mia Roybal at 85:02 to give the Cowgirls the lead.
"The players showed a lot of heart today," said Coach
Amanda Evans. "I think what's really important is that our focus was positivity and no matter what happened, even two red cards, we stayed positive. The Players played exactly how we know they are capable of. So we're very proud of them for being able to pull up."
The Cowgirls out shot Sul Ross State 7-5. Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
With this afternoon's win, the Cowgirls defeated Sul Ross State in back-to-back seasons.
Up next, the Cowgirls will be in Hays, Kansas, one week from today for a 2:30 pm (MT) match with Fort Hays State.
