Las Vegas, New Mexico - The NMHU soccer team opened the 2025 season with a 2-1 loss to visiting West Texas A&M on a cool, breezy afternoon in historic Las Vegas.

Ninon Rigal gave the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead when she knocked in a free kick at the 37:49 mark of the opening half. Solid defensive play by NMHU in the final eight minutes of the half allowed them to maintain the lead at the intermission.
The visiting Lady Buffs came out of the halftime break fast and tallied a goal just two and half minutes into the second half. They followed that up with the eventual game winning goal at 51:27 of the match.
At that point, the West Texas A&M defense turned stingy allowing the Cowgirls just two shots on goal in the final 39:00 of the match.
Haylee Driscoll got the start in goal for the Cowgirls and made 11 saves in ninety minutes played.
For the match, West Texas A&M out shot the Cowgirls 13-7 and held a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
Thursday's meeting was the 20th all time between the two schools with the Lady Buffs holding a 16-2-2 edge in the matches played.
The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Eastern New Mexico to Las Vegas for a 12:00 pm match. The Greyhounds fell at Northwestern Oklahoma State 1-0 on Thursday in their first match of the season..
