Las Vegas, NM- On a windy afternoon in Historic Las Vegas, the Cowgirls were back at the pitch on Cinder Road to face the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College.
Â
With the wind a factor, it took both teams a moment to find momentum in the scoring. Fort Lewis drew first blood in the 38
th minute, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
Â
Second half adjustments were made, and the Cowgirls found some momentum as
Taylor Delgado was able to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season and first goal of the match for the Cowgirls. However, that was all the scoring the Cowgirls managed, as the wind turned their shots off target, and the Fort Lewis keeper also recorded three saves.
Â
The Cowgirls put up stellar defense, especially keeper
Peyton Greener, who recorded 11 saves on the day and one on a penalty kick that ultimately rebounded and hit the back of the net to make Fort Lewis lead 2-1. The Skyhawks then scored again, putting the nail in the coffin to win 3-1.
Â
Amanda Evans Following the Game:
Â
"We are proud of the way our players fought today. We've been working a lot on playing together and moving up and down the field together; they showed that when we are consistent and focused, good things happen." Â Evans said, "Greener had a great game and did a good job adapting to the gusty winds, and Delgado took advantage of the space down the lines. Overall, we are proud of how we played and know that this is a good turning point in the season."
