Las Vegas, NM - The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team took the field Saturday for what is believed to be the first Homecoming Day match in program history.
"We appreciated having the opportunity to play the first soccer game on Homecoming Day," Head Coach Amanda Evans said. "We appreciate all the people who came to support us."
The Cowgirls kept Western Colorado off the scoreboard through the opening 17 minutes before the Mountaineers broke through for the first goal of the match. Western Colorado added another goal in the 29th minute to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
New Mexico Highlands came out of the break looking to generate more offensive pressure and created opportunities during the second half, but the Cowgirls were unable to find the back of the net.
Western Colorado added its third and final goal in the 82nd minute to secure the 3-0 victory.
The loss was the second of Homecoming weekend for the Cowgirls, who hosted Fort Lewis on Thursday before Saturday's match against Western Colorado.
UP NEXT: The Cowgirls return to action next week with a trip to Salt Lake City and Grand Junction next weekend to face Westminster and Colorado Mesa.
