Gunnison, Colorado - New Mexico Highlands volleyball closed the Virginia Harris/Jeanie Miller Invitational with its first win of the season Saturday, sweeping Sul Ross State after falling to Southwestern Oklahoma State earlier in the day at Paul Wright Gymnasium.

The Cowgirls finished the opening weekend 1-3.

Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, New Mexico Highlands 0

New Mexico Highlands opened Saturday with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls battled the Bulldogs throughout the opening set, pulling even at 19-19 before Southwestern Oklahoma State closed on a 6-1 run.

Lea Süsoy led New Mexico Highlands with 13 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while Aziza Morris added nine kills. Naya Dornic finished with 11 digs, and Marissa Sandoval-Moya and Caitlin Hurley recorded 13 and 11 assists, respectively.

New Mexico Highlands 3, Sul Ross State 0

The Cowgirls bounced back in Saturday's second match, earning their first victory of the season with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of Sul Ross State.

"Happy to end the weekend with a win," said Cowgirl head coach Meg Grose. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we'll get back to work, figure things out as a team and make sure we're ready to play next weekend."

New Mexico Highlands controlled the match with strong serving and play at the net, finishing with nine service aces and an 8-3 advantage in blocks. The Cowgirls also held Sul Ross State to a .009 hitting percentage.

Morris led New Mexico Highlands with 10 kills, while Süsoy and Duda Carvalho added five each. Elise Fourt recorded three service aces, while Fourt, Carvalho and Lenaea Carr each contributed four blocks.

Marissa Sandoval-Moya finished with 15 assists and 10 digs, while Dornic led the Cowgirls with 12 digs and Süsoy added 11.

New Mexico Highlands returns home next weekend to host the Meadow City Classic presented by the Trujillo Agency.
