Cowgirls Close Out Season

The Cowgirls Volleyball team finished up their 2009 season as they honored their lone senior and lost two matches on the road. On 11/3 the Cowgirls played host to the Eastern New Mexico Zias in their last homestead of the year and honored their lone senior, Doreen Zamora. The Cowgirls took the Zias to 4 games but couldn't come out with the win. The scores were 25-22, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-18 with the Cowgirls winning the second game.

Dominique Benton and Vanessa Leal both had 13 kills for the night. The Cowgirls had more kills than the Zias 51-45, respectively. The Cowgirls hitting percentage for the night was .159 while the Zias had a mere .120. Colleen Chauncey led the Cowgirls blocking efforts with five assisted blocks and one solo. Katie Spence again led the way with digs with 20 for the night. Zamora put up good numbers in her last home appearance with 10 kills and 16 digs.

The Cowgirls then travelled to Pueblo, Co to take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo. The Cowgirls lost in three matches with scores of 27-25, 25-12 and 25-20.

Chauncey led the way with nine kills and seven digs. Kelsey Groff controlled the blocks for the Cowgirls with six assisted blocks.

The Cowgirls then travelled to Alamosa, Co to Adams State College to face the Grizzlies. The Cowgirls showed the Grizzlies they wouldn't go down easily as they took the Grizzlies to four games with scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-12 and 25-19 with the Cowgirls winning the first game.

Benton led NMHU's efforts as she tallied 14 kills and seven assisted blocks with two solo blocks. Zamora had 12 digs on the night, the most for any Cowgirl. Groff had three services aces in the match.

The Cowgirls finished the season 1-28 overall but had many close calls in their 2009 campaign. They compiled 853 kills, 112 service aces, 1,115 digs, 155.5 total blocks, won 11 games and tallied 1,759 points in the season.
