Cowboys Split with Thunderwolves in Day One Action

Cowboys Win Game One 7-3; Fall in Game Two 8-7

The NMHU Cowboys split in day one action against RMAC rival the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves on 2/19 in a non-RMAC showdown between two of the top team in the conference. The Cowboys would take game one by a final score of 7-3 and would be edged out by CSU-P in game two by a final of 8-7. The Cowboys are now 6-1 on the season and look to wrap up their non-conference series with the Thunderwolves on 2/20 with weather permitting.

In game one the Cowboys rode another excellent outing by Cowboy ace, Drew Vassil (3-0). Vassil would hold the Thunderwolves to just seven hits in his complete game seven inning performance. Vassil would retire nine batters and allow just three walks in his third win of the season. The Cowboys offense would cause fits for the Thunderwolves as they would finish the day with three double as two home runs
as a team and a team batting average of .357.

Game one outstanding players include: Phillip Rodriguez, Christian Garcia and Thomas DeAngelis. Rodriguez finished game one going 2-4 with one double, two runs scored and one RBI. Garcia finished going 1-2 with one homerun, one run scored and one RBI. DeAngelis went 2-3 with one home run, two runs scored and two RBI's.

In game two the Cowboys and Thunderwolves would trade innings as each team's offense would rally back and forth throughout the contest. The Cowboys would come out and gain an early 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning then the Thunderwolves would fire back with some offense of their own as they tied it up after two at a score of 3-3. The Thunderwolves would have a huge sixth inning scoring five runs to take a commanding 8-3 lead but the Cowboys would not give in as they would score four runs of their own to narrow the gap to one run with the score at 8-7. The Cowboys would hold CSU-P scoreless in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't score in the top of the seventh inning despite a late surge offensively to fall for the first time in the 2010 season by a final score of 8-7.

On the mound for the Cowboys was Derek Grieve (1-1). Grieve would record one strikeout and allow eight hits and five earned runs in four innings pitched. Steve Gabbert would pitch one inning in relief of Grieve and allow three hits and three runs. Andrew Herrman would then come in to close out the game for the Cowboys and allow two hits and record one strikeout in one inning pitched.

Outstanding performers for the Cowboys in game two include: David Bustillos and Oscar Sigala. Bustillos would finish game two going 2-4 with one double, one run scored and one RBI. Sigala finished going 2-4 with one double, one run scored and three RBI's.

The Cowboys look to wrap up their non-conference series with the Thunderwolves on 2/20 with weather permitting.
