Cowboys Sweep Colorado Christian Cougars

The NMHU Cowboys completed their first RMAC series in winning fashion as they swept the Colorado Christian Cougars on day two of the series by scores of 15-10 and 9-8. The Cowboys offense was again the main story of the day as the Cowboys finished with a .420 batting average for both games combined. The Cowboys are now 9-1 overall and 3-0 in RMAC play. The Cowboys are off to a great start and will hit the road on 3/2 to Portales, N.M. to take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University.

The Cowboys offense came through in clutch situations all day as the Cougars would threaten throughout the day, but the Cowboys offensive arsenal was just too much for CCU. In game one, the Cowboys would rack up four doubles, two triples and one home run. In game two, the Cowboys would do more of the same as they would hit one double and two home runs.

In game one the Cowboys would jump out to a 5-1 lead after three innings. The Cougars would tie it up in the top of the fourth inning at 5-5, but the Cowboys offensive unit would not let that stand for long as they hammered in 10 runs within the next five innings to pull ahead for the win.

Steven Becerra started on the mound for the Cowboys. Becerra would pitch three and two-third innings and record four strikeouts. Becerra allowed six hits and five earned runs in his appearance.Derek Grieve (2-1) would get the win for the Cowboys as he pitched three and one-third innings recording two strikeouts and allowing five hits and two earned runs. Trent Evins would finish out the game for the Cowboys and allow two hits and three earned runs while recording two strikeouts in two innings of work.
Offensive leaders in game one include: David Bustillos, Scott Fackrell, Kyle Gutchewsky and Phillip Rodriguez. Bustillos finished game one going four of six with one run scored, two RBI's and one double. Fackrell went four of five with three runs scored, two RBI's, one double and one triple. Gutchewsky finished going three of four with three runs scored and two RBI's. Rodriguez finished game one going three of four with three runs scored, four RBI's, one triple and one home run.

In game two the Cougars threatened, but the Cowboys offense would keep them just out of the Cougars reach as the Cowboys edged out CCU 9-8 to complete the weekend sweep. The Cougars would keep it close throughout and would rally late in the seventh inning but would fall short for their third loss of the weekend.

Tyler Shaddy(1-0) got the start for the Cowboys and would record three strikeouts and allow eight hits and four earned runs in three and two-third innings pitched. Cruz Sedilllo would come in for relief and record one strikeout and allow three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work. Dylan Wisneski would make an appearance for one-third of an inning for the Cowboys and Danny Brown would get the save for the Cowboys as he recorded two strikeouts and allow two hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched.

Offensive leaders for game two include: Christian Garcia, Jason Carr, Jarod Robinette and Robert Vasquez Garcia went two for four with one run scored. Carr finished going two for two with two runs scored, two RBI's and one home run. Robinette finished going two of three with two runs scored, two RBI's and one double. Vasquez would close out the day going two of three with one run scored, three RBI's and one home run.

The Cowboys are off to a great start to the 2010 season with a 9-1 overall record and a 3-0 RMAC record. The Cowboys will be in action again on 3/2 when they hit the road and travel to Portales, N.M. to take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico University.
