The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team started out their 2010 season in a big way on 2/6 as they ran through the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds by scores of 16-0 and 21-3 in the 2010 home opening double header. The Cowboys offensive explosion produced 12 doubles and three homeruns in their first two games. The Cowboys finished the day with a .487 team batting average en route to their first two wins of the season. The Cowboys will take their show on the road as they travel down to Abilene, Texas for a four game road swing as they take on the University of the Southwest, McMurry University and Hardin Simmons University.
The Cowboys started out the day with an offensive showcase as they pounded the ENMU pitchers. The Cowboys racked up 18 hits in 35 at bats for a team batting average of .514 in game one of the double header. The Cowboys would hit four doubles and three homeruns in the Cowboys 16-0 win.
The Cowboys were led offensively by
Danny Brown,
Christian Garcia and
Phillip Rodriguez. Brown finished game one with three hits, two runs scored, four RBI's and two homeruns. Garcia finished with two hits, two runs scored, two RBI's and one double. Rodriguez finished with two hits, one run scored and three RBI's.
On the mound for the Cowboys was
Drew Vassil. Vassil had an excellent day for the Cowboys as he held the Greyhounds hitless through the fifth inning and earned his first shutout of the season. Vassil would end the day pitching six innings allowing four hits, no earned runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
In game two, it was more of the same as the Cowboys pummeled the Greyhound pitchers as they racked up 20 hits in 43 at bats. The Cowboys finished with a .465 batting average for the game. The Cowboys hit a season high eight doubles in the game as well as one homerun.
Offensive leaders for the Cowboys were: Phil Rodriguez,
David Bustillos and
Danny Brown. Rodriguez finished the game with three hits, four runs scored, three RBI's, one double and one homerun. Bustillos finished with three hits, two runs scored, two RBI's, one stolen base and two doubles. Brown finished with two hits, one run scored, two RBI's and one double.
David Saiz got the start on the mound for the Cowboys. Saiz finished the day allowing nine hits and three earned runs in five innings pitched. Saiz also added in four strikeouts in his first win as a Cowboy.
