The #11 New Mexico Highlands University baseball team solidified their first place position atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on 3/13 as they took two out of three games from the Roadrunners of Metro State College. The Cowboys started out the series slow as they dropped the first game 12-8 but would rebound in the Saturday double header as they swept the Roadrunners by scores of 8-4 and 4-1 respectively. The Cowboys are off to a great start as they are now 16-5 on the season and 7-2 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will take the field again on 3/19 as they take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo for game one of a four game series.
The Cowboys currently sit in first place in the RMAC as well as the NCAA Central Region which includes teams from the RMAC as well as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Cowboys are also ranked nationally in many polls, most notably the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll (11th). The Cowboys are also ranked in
Collegiate Baseballs NCAA DII Poll (25th) and the Cowboys have made their first ever appearance in the
Ping Baseball NCAA DII Top 30 Poll (25th).
Outstanding players for the Metro series include:
Danny Brown (1-0) and
Trent Evins (3-0). Brown was a triple threat for the Cowboys as he played well in the field, excelled in the batter's box and dealt from the mound. Brown finished the weekend going 7 of 13 with a batting average of .538. Brown had two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI's on the weekend. Brown played excellent in the field as well as he finished the series with no errors. On the mound, Brown recorded his first win of the season in his first ever collegiate start at pitcher. Brown allowed just three hits and no earned runs in his five and one-third innings pitched. Brown walked just one batter while recording five strikeouts in the Cowboys series clinching win over the Roadrunners of Metro State College. Evins (3-0) had one appearance on the mound for the Cowboys in the Metro State College series. Evins would get the win for the Cowboys as he allowed four hits and one earned run in seven innings pitched for the Cowboys. Evins would record four strikeouts and walk two batters in his third win of the season.
The Cowboys will take the field again on 3/19 as they take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo for game one of a four game series. Game one of the four game series will start at 3:00pm on 3/19 at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M.
