The #11 NMHU Cowboys made short work of the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo by a final score of 18-1 on 3/19. The NMHU vs. CSU-P series was cut short and will be ruled a one game series thanks to some inclement weather that swept across northeastern New Mexico over the weekend. The Cowboys are now 17-5 overall and 8-2 in RMAC play as they sit atop the RMAC as well as the NCAA Central Region in first place.
The Cowboys rode two huge innings in the five inning game (the game was cut short due to a winter storm that ended the entire series). The Cowboys would start out with a huge six run first inning and then back it up with another great inning in the fourth as they scored 11 runs. The Cowboys would finish the day with three doubles and two home runs en route to a .483 team batting average for the game.
On the mound for the Cowboys was
Drew Vassil (6-1). Vassil got back on track for his sixth win of the season. Vassil stunned the CSU-Pueblo batters allowing only four hits and one run in five innings pitched. Vassil would retire five batters on the day bringing his strikeout total to 42 on the season. Vassil leads the Cowboys as well as the RMAC in strikeouts for the season.
Outstanding performers in the field include:
Christian Garcia,
Danny Brown and
Jason Carr. Garcia finished the day going 3-4 with two runs scored, three RBI's and one home run. Brown went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Carr went 2-3 with three runs scored, four RBI's, one double and one home run.
The red hot Cowboys will take the diamond again on 3/23 as they play host to in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University for a nine inning game at 2:00 pm in Las Vegas, N.M.
