The #9 NMHU Cowboys completed their third RMAC series sweep of the season on 4/11 as they thrashed the Regis Rangers by a final score of 25-12 in Denver, Colo. The Cowboys swept the series with scores of 8-5, 3-1, 4-2 and finally broke out and over powered the Rangers in the series finale with a 25-12 pounding. The Cowboys are now 29-6 on the season and 19-3 in RMAC play. The Cowboys sweep keeps them sitting atop the RMAC in first place overall. The Cowboys are currently sitting in first place in the NCAA Central Region as well in the latest poll.
The Cowboys finished the weekend with a .371 team batting average and racked up 13 doubles and three home runs in the series sweep. As a team the Cowboys now lead the RMAC in Batting Average (.389), Slugging Percentage (.599), On Base Percentage (.463), Runs Scored (399), Hits (470), RBI's (357), Doubles (101) and Stolen Bases (56).
Getting wins on the mound for the Cowboys this week include:
Drew Vassil,
Trent Evins,
Danny Brown and
Steven Becerra. Vassil (9-1) earned his ninth win of the season with a seven inning performance. Vassil allowed one earned run on 10 hits and recorded three strikeouts in his seven innings pitched. Evins (5-0) kept his flawless record intact with a complete game win. Evins allowed one run on five hits and recorded a season high seven strikeouts in his fifth win of the season.
Danny Brown (3-0) also managed to stay perfect with a complete game showing of his own. Brown allowed one run on two hits and recorded a season high five strikeouts against the Rangers for his third win of the season. To close out the series Steven Becerra (2-1) had a four inning showing to get the win for the Cowboys. Becerra allowed three runs on four hits in the win.
Outstanding players for the Cowboys throughout the series include:
Brad Morgan,
Justin Kaid and
Phillip Rodriguez. Morgan finished the series going 8-14 with four runs scored, three RBI's and two doubles. Kaid finished the series going 6-10 with four runs scored, three RBI's, one double and one home run. The home run was Kaid's first of the year. Rodriguez finished the series going 7-12 with five runs scored, four RBI's, two doubles and one home run.
The Cowboys are currently ranked ninth in the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association DII Top 25 poll, 14th by the
Collegiate Baseball Newspapers DII Top 30 poll and 16th by the
PING! Baseball DII Top 30 poll. The Cowboys hope to continue to climb in the polls once again after their series sweep over Regis University.
The Cowboys will be in action again on 4/13 as they play host to the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo for a mid-week doubleheader. Game time is set for 1:00 pm in Las Vegas, N.M.
