The #7 NMHU Cowboys fell today to the Mavericks of Mesa State College in both games of their RMAC double header. The Cowboys fell by narrow margins of 5-3 and 9-7 for the day. The Cowboys had just recently earned their RMAC regular season championship on 4/23 with their very convincing 15-8 win over the Mavericks, but the Mavericks were the better team today as they take the RMAC series from the Cowboys two games to one. This is the first RMAC series that the Cowboys have lost this season. The 5-3 loss snapped a 14 game winning streak by the Cowboys. The Cowboys are now 33-8 on the season and 23-5 in RMAC play.
Despite four home runs hit by the Cowboys on the day, they struggled as a team from the batter's box as they only managed to muster a .258 team batting average for the day. In game one the Cowboys hit a season low .151 as a team and in game two the Cowboys picked it up to hit .379 as a team. Besides the Cowboys four home runs, there were no other extra base hits by the Cowboys usually high octane offense.
On the mound for the Cowboys in game one was
Trent Evins (6-1). Evins tasted defeat for the first time this season as he allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out five batters in five and two-third innings pitched. In game two
Danny Brown (4-1) also lost his first ballgame of the season as he allowed seven runs on seven hits while recording two strike outs in three innings pitched.
Notable Cowboys on the day include:
Christian Garcia and
Jason Carr. In game two Garcia went a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored. Also in game two
Jason Carr was responsible for all of the Cowboys seven runs as he went 3-3 on the day with three home runs, seven RBIs and three runs scored.
The Cowboys will take to the diamond one more time in Grand Junction, Colo. as they lock horns with the Mesa State Mavericks for a non-RMAC game on 4/25 at 12:00 pm.
