The #7 NMHU Cowboys fell in Game One of the RMAC Tournament Championship series to the Mavericks of Mesa State by a final score of 15-8. Since the Cowboys were unscathed up until their tangle with the Mavericks a second game will decide who will win the RMAC tournament Championship. The Cowboys have already won the RMAC Regular Season Championship, when the beat the Mavericks in Grand Junction, Colo. by a score of 15-8 on 4/23. The Cowboys are now 38-11 overall in the 2010 season and look to add one more to the wins column when they take on the Mavericks on 5/9 at 11:00 am CST in Kearney, Neb. for the RMAC Tournament Championship.
Both RMAC powerhouses showed off their offensive prowess throughout the game, but Mesa State would be the better team this day as they never trailed in the game. The Cowboys would shrink the Mesa State lead only to have the Mavericks pull away even more. The Cowboys got as close as trailing 10-8 but that would be as close as it would get as the Mavericks sealed the win with a five run eighth. The Cowboys finished the day with a .350 team batting average and two doubles and one triple.
Offensive leaders for the Cowboys include:
Christian Garcia and
Oscar Sigala. Garcia would finish the day a homerun off the cycle as he finished the day going 3-6 with two runs scored, three RBI's, one double and one triple. Garcia also showed off his wheels as he had two stolen bases, one of which he stole home as he leapt out as the pitcher was in his wind-up to slide in safe for the Cowboys. Sigala finished the game going 3-5 with one run scored.
Getting the start for the Cowboys was
David Saiz. Saiz would throw two-thirds of an inning before taking a line drive off the right shin that would cause him to leave the game. Saiz would record one strikeout in his outing.
Dylan Wisneski (0-1) would come in for Saiz and be credited with the loss. Wisneski would allow five runs on six hits and record one strikeout in one and one-third innings pitched.
Derek Grieve would come in for relief of Wisneski. Grieve would allow four runs on six hits and record one strikeout in three and two third innings on the mound.
Steve Gabbert would face two batters in the sixth inning.
Andrew Herrmanwould then come in and allow four runs on four hits in one and one-third innings pitched. Then
Andrew Herrman would come in for the end of the game and allow one run on three hits in two innings pitched.
The Cowboys will look to win that elusive RMAC Tournament Championship on 5/9 when they take the diamond in Kearney, Neb. to take on the Mavericks of Mesa State at 11:00 am CST.
