Rangers Upend Cowgirls

#25 Alyssa Lopez
Box Score The NMHU Women's Basketball team lost on the road at Regis University, by the final score of 76-65.  The Cowgirls had another rough start on the road that let the Rangers get out to an early lead that they would not relinquish.  The Rangers managed to build a 12 point lead with 10:33 remaining in the first half, but the Cowgirls would fight back to reduce that deficit to seven points five minutes later.  Regis turned the pressure back on and took the 42-27 lead into the locker room.  In the second half the Rangers came out on fire and quickly built up their lead to 20 with 16:43 remaining in the game.  Regis would lead by as much as 30 in the second half, but the Cowgirls never stopped fighting and were able to cut the lead to 14 points with two minutes remaining.  When the final buzzer sounded the Rangers had triumphed on their home court by the final score of 76-65.  With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 0-2 record in the RMAC and 3-2 in overall play.

The Cowgirls have had trouble of late with their shooting and tonight was no exception as they only managed to shoot 35% from the field and 18% from behind the three-point arc.  The Rangers, led by the double-double performance of Sarah Feeney, took advantage of this problem, shooting 51% from the field and making an impressive 23 of their 25 free throw attempts.

Cowgirl Alyssa Lopez is quickly emerging as the Cowgirls' most consistent player this season.  Lopez led all scorers with 20 points in her 36 minutes on the court.  She played almost the entire game adding four rebounds and two assists to her night's totals.  Lopez has been the Cowgirls' best offensive threat this season.

Whitley Coca finished the game with 12 points for the Cowgirls.  She shot 5-12 from the field, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals in her 28 minutes of playing time.

China Smith has been another consistent player for the Cowgirls this year.  Smith led the Cowgirls in rebounding with six, and scored 10 points.  She shot 4-8 from the field and added three steals in her 28 minutes on the court.

The Cowgirls will be in non-conference action again, on 12/6, as they travel to Espanola, N.M. to take on the Eagles of Northern New Mexico College.  The Cowgirls won their last meeting, on 11/12, in Las Vegas by the final score of 93-52.  Northern New Mexico has a 3-9 overall record this season. The Cowgirls will be looking to get their season back on track with this second encounter of the season series against the Eagles.  The game is scheduled for a 5 pm tip-off time.
