The NMHU Baseball team started off the 2011 season with a bang on 2/11 as they hammered in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University 9-3 in the opening game of the University of Texas-Permian Basin Tournament in Odessa, Texas. The Cowboys didn't let the fact that they have been practicing indoors the past three weeks due to winter weather in Las Vegas affect them as they jumped out to an early lead on the Greyhounds. The Cowboys would enjoy a comfortable 8-0 lead after six inning of play. With the win, the Cowboys start their 2011 campaign with a 1-0 record as they prepare to play three more games over the weekend long tournament.
As a team, the Cowboys would finish the day hitting .353 as a team. The Cowboys would have 12 hits and one double as a team for the game.
J.P. Hollywood,
Thomas King and
Jarod Robinette would each have great days at the plate in the win. Hollywood finished the day going 2-4 with one run scored and two RBI's. King went 3-4 from the plate with three TBI's and Robinette would finish the day going a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Trent Evins (1-0), the RMAC's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, would pitch six no-hit innings for the Cowboys in the win. Evins would finish the game with six strikeouts and no hits in 20 batters faced. Evins would walk one batter and hit two on the day.
“The nicest thing about today was just being able to get outside.
Trent Evins was really in command today and we played well offensively in the early part of the game. We need to improve on our defense (the Cowboys finished with four errors on the day) but that will come with more time on the field,” commented Head Coach
Steve Jones after his team's 9-3 win over ENMU.
The Cowboys will take the diamond for two games on 2/12. The Cowboys will take on the Orediggers from the Colorado School of Mines at 12:00 p.m. and follow up with tournament host UTPB at 6:00 p.m.
