Cowboys Close Out UTPB Tournament 3-1

The NMHU Cowboys wrapped up their final three games of the University of Texas-Permian Basin tournament on 2/13. The Cowboys went 2-1 in their final three games with wins over Colorado School of Mines (11-7) and tournament host UTPB (4-0). The Cowboys would fall in their final game against Wayland Baptist University 14-5. With the conclusion of the tournament, the Cowboys are now 3-1 overall in their young season.

The Cowboys handled RMAC foe the Colorado School of Mines in a non-conference match-up on 2/12 by a final score of 11-7. The Cowboys would finish the day with a .263 team batting average. Justin Kaid and Clay Mohr were leaders at the plate for the Cowboys. Kaid finished going 2-4 with three RBI's and Mohr went 2-4 with three runs scored, one RBI and one double on the day.

Greg Fowler (1-0) got the win on the mound in his first appearance as a Cowboy. Fowler would allow one earned run on four hits while recording nine strikeouts in five innings pitched. Alec New would come in for relief of Fowler and allow three runs on four hits in two innings pitched. Richard Sandoval would then come in for New and allow one run on two hits and record six strikeouts in two innings pitched.

Against UTPB, the Cowboys would come out with a 4-0 win over the very talented Falcons. The Cowboys would finish with a team batting average of .294 with four doubles. A.J. Alexander, J.P. Hollywood and Eric Maupin had the high offensive numbers for the Cowboys. Alexander finished the night going 3-4 with two RBI's and one double. Hollywood went 2-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and one double. Maupin rounds out the top performers by going 2-4 with one RBI and one double.

Kyle Sayers (1-0) had a great day on the mound in his first appearance as a Cowboy. Sayers allowed no runs on four hits and struck out 11 batters in six shutout innings pitched. Jason Sirak would come in for Sayers and continue the shutout innings as he allowed no runs on two hits and recorded three strikeouts in two innings pitched. Jared Bowser would close out the game for the Cowboys as he kept with the trend of shutout innings with no runs scored on one hit and recorded three strikeouts in one inning pitched. The Cowboy pitching staff would record 17 strikeouts in the Cowboys 4-0 win.

In the final game of the weekend, the Cowboys would taste defeat for the first time in 2011. The Cowboys would fall to Wayland Baptist 14-5. The Cowboys would jump out to an early lead, but two big Wayland Baptist innings would spell doom for the Cowboys. The Cowboys would finish the day with a .303 team batting average with four doubles and one homerun. Erik Scott would finish the day going 1-1 with one run scored, two RBI's and the Cowboys first homerun of the 2011 season.

Edgar Vela (0-1) got the start for the Cowboys and would allow four earned runs on six hits and struck out two batters in three innings pitched. Steven Becerra would allow no earned runs on two hits and recorded two strikeouts in two innings pitched. Chris Waha would allow three runs on three hits and record one strikeout in one and one third innings pitched. Cruz Sedillo would allow one run on three hits and strikeout one in one and two third innings pitched. Antonio Huez Robles would finish off the day by allowing four runs on four hits and struck out one in one inning pitched.

“It was a good weekend for us. We had good weather and a lot of our guys got some good work in. We had some things that we did well on the weekend and some things we need to improve on,” commented NMHU Head Coach Steve Jones on his Cowboys weekend performance.

The Cowboys will hit the road again on 2/25 as they travel to Emporia, Kansas for a four game road swing against Arkansas Tech University and Emporia State University.
