Cowboys Split in Day One Action Against Arkansas Tech

The NMHU Cowboy Baseball team split in their opening games with Gulf South Conference opponent Arkansas Tech on 2/26. The Cowboys would fall in the first game of the day 11-2, but would bounce back in the second game to come away with a 5-4 win. After their first day of competition against, the Cowboys are now 4-2 on the season as they head into RMAC play as the Cowboys host Regis University on 3/4 for a four game RMAC series.

In game one, the Cowboys showed their fatigue from their hectic bus trip due to weather in the Midwest as they struggled offensively only managing to score two runs for the game. As a team the Cowboys finished the day with a .351 batting average. The Cowboys would hit just one double on the day. Thomas King would have the high numbers for the Cowboys in the game. King would finish the day going 4-5 with one double and one RBI.

On the mound for the Cowboys was Trent Evins (1-1) Evins would suffer his first defeat of the young season as he allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. Evins would record four strikeouts on the day and walk two batters. Jason Sirak would come in for relief of Evins and allow one run on three hits while striking out two batters in two innings pitched. Xavior Tavorn would then come in for relief of Sirak and allow four earned runs on four hits and walk three batters in one third of an inning pitched. Cruz Sedillo would finish the game for the Cowboys as he allowed no runs and no hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched and strikeout one batter.

In game two, the Cowboys would produce more offensively. The Cowboys would finish with a team batting average of .250 and have one double in the game. Thomas Valenza would finish the day going 2-4 with two RBI's, one run scored and one double.

Kyle Sayers (2-0) would get the win for the Cowboys as he would allow two earned runs on two hits and record two strikeouts while walking five batters in five innings pitched. Eric Maupin would come in for relief of Sayers and allow one run on two hits in two thirds of an inning pitched while striking out one batter. Richard Sandoval would come in and allow no runs on no hits in one third of an inning pitched. Jared Bowser would record his first save of the season as he closed out the game for the Cowboys. Bowser shut down Arkansas Tech by allowing no runs on no hits in one inning pitched while striking out one batter.

The Cowboys will look to take the series win on 2/27 as they take on the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech for game three of their series.
