Cowboys Avoid Sweep With Day Three Shutout of Orediggers

The NMHU Cowboys managed to go 1-3 in their weekend series against RMAC opponent Colorado School of Mines, by capturing a win in game four on the third day of the series. The Orediggers were able to win the first game on Friday, 4/15, by a score of 7-2. The Orediggers then swept the double header on Saturday, 4/16, winning 14-7 and 5-3. The Cowboys recovered on Sunday, 4/17, as they cruised to victory. The offense generated an impressive 21 hits in game four and the pitching staff combined for a two hit shutout as the Cowboys got the victory in the final game of the series with a score of 14-0. With the 1-3 series record against CSM the Cowboys, led by Head Coach Steve Jones, improve to a 10-17 record in the RMAC and 16-20 in overall play.

Edgar Vela (1-2) was the winning pitcher, starting game four of the series for the Cowboys. Vela threw six innings from the mound, allowing only one hit and no runs from the 23 batters faced. He struck out seven Orediggers and walked five. Antonio Huez Robles was brought in to relieve Vela in the seventh inning. Robles pitched two innings of relief from the mound, allowing only one hit and no runs while facing eight batters, striking out one. The Cowboys' closer Jared Bowser was brought in to finish the game in the ninth inning. Bowser faced three batters, allowing no hits, and struck out one to wrap up the win for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys' bats caught fire in game four as the team combined for an impressive .457 batting average on 21 total hits. The Cowboys hit six doubles and drew seven walks on their way to scoring 14 runs in the game. Several Cowboys combined to trouble the Orediggers' pitching in an offensive breakout for the team.

Luis Saenz was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.

Clay Mohr hit 3-6 from the batter's box and drew a walk. Mohr scored five runs and had two RBIs in the game.

A.J. Alexander was also perfect at the plate going 2-2, drawing one walk, and reached base once when he was hit by a pitch. Alexander had three RBIs and scored a run for the Cowboys.

Eric Maupin went 2-3 at the plate with two walks. Maupin hit a double and drove in three runs in the game.

Erik Scott went 3-6 from the batter's box and drew a walk. Scott hit a double and scored three runs.

Thomas King was also 3-6 from the batter's box in the game. King had a double and scored three runs for the team.

The NMHU Cowboys will continue conference action next weekend, 4/21-23, as they travel to Denver, Colo. to face Regis University in a four game series. The Rangers are in second place in the RMAC Plains Division, one spot ahead of the Cowboys, with a 14-13 record in the RMAC and 16-18 overall. Game one on Friday, 4/21, is set to begin at 3pm. The game two and three double header on Saturday, 4/22, will start at 12pm with game three to follow shortly after the completion of game two. On Sunday, 4/23, game four will start at 12pm.
