Cowboys Finish Weekend 1-3 in RMAC Series

The NMHU Cowboys finished off their RMAC four game series with the Mavericks of Mesa State College on 4/3 with a 6-2 loss to the Mavericks. The Cowboys finished the series going 1-3 on the weekend with Mesa State. The Cowboys lone win came on 4/2 as they rode a late rally to score four runs in the sixth inning to come away with the 4-3 win. The Cowboys would fall in the other two games of the series 7-1 and 8-5. After their weekend series the Cowboys are now 14-13 on the season and 9-10 in RMAC play.

In game one of the series the Cowboys fell 7-1 to the Mavericks. The Cowboys finished with a .236 team batting average. Luis Saenz and Clay Mohr finished with the high numbers for the Cowboys in the game. Saenz finished 3-4 with one run scored and Mohr finished 2-3 for the day.

Trent Evins (2-5) would get the start for the Cowboys and allow six runs off of six hits and strikeout seven in six innings pitched. Cruz Sedillo would then come in for Evins and allow one run off of four hits in one inning pitched. Chris Waha would finish off the game for the Cowboys allowing no runs and one hit while striking out two MSC batters in one inning pitched.

The Cowboys would be lead in game two by Kyle Sayers. Sayers (4-2) would get the start and the win for the Cowboys as he allowed just three runs off of three hits and struck out seven MSC batters in six and two-third innings pitched. Jared Bowser would then come in for Sayers and earn his fifth save of the season as he closed out the game for the Cowboys allowing no runs and no hits after facing two batters in one-third of an inning pitched.

The Cowboys finished game two with a .269 team batting average. Eric Maupin, Clay Mohr and Luis Saenz would lead the Cowboys offensively for the game. Maupin finished 2-3 with one run scored, two RBI's and one double. Mohr finished 2-3 with one run scored and Saenz finished 1-3 with two RBI's.

Games three and four would be determined by big inning by the Mavericks as MSC would manage to score six runs in a single inning in each game to pull ahead of the Cowboys and secure the win. I game three Mesa state would scored six runs in the third inning to pull away 7-2 right after the Cowboys had lead 2-1 after scoring two runs in the top of the third. The Cowboys would hold MSC to just one run the rest of the game, but the Mavericks big third inning would be too much for the Cowboys to overcome. The Cowboys would be lead offensively by Scott Fackrell. Fackrell would finish the day 1-3 with one run scored, three RBI's and one homerun.

Game four would be more of the same as the Cowboys would lead the Mavericks 2-0 through seven innings played, but a six run eighth inning by the Mavericks would spell doom for the Cowboys as they would fall 6-2 in the final game of the series. A.J. Alexander, Eric Maupin and Erik Scott would finish the day leading the Cowboys offensively. Alexander finished 2-4 with one RBI and one double. Maupin would finish 2-4 on the day. Scott would finish 1-4 with one run scored, one RBI and one homerun.

The Cowboys will return to their home field for a mid-week series against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University on 4/6. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
