The NMHU Cowboys ousted the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament on 5/14 in an 11 inning thriller 9-8. The sixth seeded Cowboys now advance to take on the #1 seeded Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney for the rite to face the Mavericks of Mesa State College for the RMAC Tournament Championship on 5/15.
The Cowboys would jump out to an early lead 1-0 lead over the ThunderWolves, but that would be short lived as CSU-Pueblo would take a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Both RMAC powerhouses would trade blows throughout the game as each team had an answer for the counterpart after each score. The Cowboys would take an 8-6 lead going into the ninth inning, but again the ThunderWolves would have an answer as they would hit a two run homerun to knot the score up at 8-8 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Cowboys would go scoreless in the ninth, but would also hold the ThunderWolves scoreless through the tenth and eleventh innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning,
Clay Mohr would reach on single through the right side then steal second to put himself in scoring position with one out on the board.
Jarod Robinette would then ground out to the second baseman advancing Mohr to third base.
Scott Fackrell would then step up to the plate as a pinch hitter and hit the biggest single of his career as a Cowboys as he singled through the left side bringing in Mohr to advance the Cowboys to the elimination game against the Lopers of UNK.
Edgar Vela would get the start on the mound for the Cowboys and allow six runs (four earned) on four hits and strikeout six batters in five and two-third innings pitched.
Richard Sandoval would then come in for the Cowboys and allow no runs on two hits and strikeout one batter in one and one-third inning pitched.
Xavier Tavorn would then come in for Sandoval and hold the ThunderWolves scoreless and hitless while striking out one batter in one and one-third inning pitched.
Jared Bowser would then come in for the Cowboys and allow one run on no hits and strikeout one batter in one-third of an inning pitched.
Cruz Sedillo (3-1) would then come in get the win for the Cowboys as he held on after giving up a two run homerun to CSU-Pueblo to tie the game and close out the remainder of the game for the Pokes by allowing one run on two hits in three innings pitched.
Offensively for the Cowboys
Eric Maupin,
Clay Mohr and
Erik Scott would have the high numbers of the game. Maupin would finish the game 3-5 with three RBI's and one double. Mohr would finish 3-6 with one run scored. Scott would finish 1-2 with three runs scored and one RBI in the game.
Scott Fackrell would have the biggest hit of the game for the Cowboys finishing 1-1 with the game winning RBI.
The Cowboys now advance to take on the #1 seeded Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the night cap on 5/14 in Grand Junction, Colo. for the rite to face the Mesa State Mavericks for the RMAC Tournament Championship on 5/15 in Grand Junction, Colo. at 12:00 p.m.
