The Highlands Volleyball team dropped it's two matches Saturday at West Texas A&M against Texas A&M Kingsville (25-22, 15-25, 24-26, 18-25) and Valdosta State University (26-24, 23-25, 21-25, 19-25).
The Cowgirls started strong against Kingsville with a 5-3 run but the Javelinas answered back going on a 10-5 run making the match 10-13. As the Javelinas struck, the Cowgirls were plotting their moves and struck often. At 17-19,
Kelsey Groff aced the libero and started rally to push the Cowgirls to a 25-22 victory.
Set two proved to be difficult for the Cowgirls when the Javelinas used momentum to even the match at one set apiece.The Cowgirls fought hard the next two sets but could not gain the ground they needed to win take the match.
"I thought we played well, but I wanted a better outcome," stated Head Coach
Jim Deisler. "There are great teams at this tournament and every team's play level has increased two-fold."
Match two of the day showed the talent and capabilities that the Cowgirls posess. Valdosta came out swinging, but Highlands answered right back trading points. At 13-17 in the first set,
Ashley Nugent buried a ball to start the Highlands momentum, but Valdosta notched more kills making the match 19-24. With five set points to play with, Valdosta could not capitalize and made four hitting errors.
Senior setter
Brooke Fahnestock spread her offense and pushed her team to take the first set 26-24.
"The first set proved exactly what we are capable of. Our team is looking better and better every day and I'm excited to see what our future matches hold. We plan on winning a lot of matches this season," Deisler continued.
The Cowgirls take on University of the Southwest on Monday at 5 P.M.
