Cowgirls Fall to In-State Rival WNMU 3-0

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M.- The New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls Volleyball Team fell to 2-13 in the  RMAC  and 6-19 overall, in their loss to in-state rival Western New Mexico University Mustangs, 10-5 in the RMAC and 13-12 overall, on Friday, 10/27 at the John A. Wilson Complex. The Cowgirls lost in three hard fought sets 25-22, 25-17, and 25-18.

The Cowgirls battled hard in the first set defending their home court. NMHU fired away with 16 kills and a .231 attack percentage in the first set. Having a six-six tie in the early set the Cowgirls looked like they were giving the lady Mustangs all they can handle.  After a break in action the Cowgirls aimed to trim the 20-17 lead, first with a service error by WNMU, then a string of excellent offensive execution with a kill by Andrea Nunez and a service ace by Ashley Nugent to make it 20-19. After back an fourth action with both teams exchanging points, The Cowgirls faced match point with the Mustangs leading 24-21. However, the Cowgirls were able to win the next point to keep the match alive. Unfortunately, the Mustangs overcame the Cowgirls run and captured the next point to win the first set 25-22.

The second set going into a 9-9 tie the Cowgirls kept battling with all their might to try and spilt the first two sets. With the Cowgirls on the attack they managed to obtain ten kills and only six service errors in the set.  Viewing a comeback in sight the Cowgirls fought back to make it a 19-15 ball game before the lady Mustangs earned four straight points to make a 22-15 and never looked to let the Cowgirls back within striking distance capturing the set 25-17.

In set three, the Cowgirls started strong but were not able to keep their own momentum. Fighting back from an 18-13 deficit, NMHU tried regrouped to make it an intriguing match, but landed up losing in three sets.

Leading scorer for the Cowgirls was junior outside hitter Darian Mullen, with 17 kills, seven digs and one assisted block. Also aiding NMHU's attack was freshman setter, Quiana Vigil who had 26 assists for her team.

Defensively for the Cowgirls, junior libero, Katie Saavedra had 13 digs and one service ace for the night.

The Cowgirls hit the road, on 11/2, to take on RMAC West Division leader Adams State College who has recently come out ranked 25th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
