Box Score The NMHU Cowgirl Soccer team dominated the Cougars of Colorado Christian Univeristy, on 10/7, in Lakewood, Colo., but settled for 1-1 tie in another exciting double-overtime game. With their second consecutive draw in conference play, the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach
Justin Wagar, improve to 2-4-2 in the RMAC and 4-6-2 in overall play.
The Cougars managed to take the first shot of the game in the 9th minute, but it was the only shot they were allowed in the first half. The Cowgirls quickly took control of the match and began a constant attack on the CCU goal. They dominated the first half with eight shots and four corner kicks, but were not able to score a goal. The first half ended with the teams tied at 0-0.
CCU broke the scoreless tie at the beginning of the second half. They earned a penalty kick in the 47th minute and the Cougars' Abby Larsen was able to convert the goal to take the 1-0 lead.
The Cowgirls immediately went on the offensive, taking the next five shots before finally grabbing a goal of their own. In the 61st minute, striker
Crystal Schuder equalized for the Cowgirls on an assist from
Marci Johnson. Schuder's fourth goal of the year tied the game up, 1-1.
The Cowgirls continued their assault in the Cougar's third of the pitch and outshot CCU 10-3 in the second half. Despite their ability to control the play and attack constantly, the Cowgirls were not able to find the go-ahead goal. When regular time ended with the game tied up at one apiece, the both teams prepared for overtime.
The Cowgirls continued their domination of the match in the first overtime period. They took five unanswered shots and had their best opportunity in the 95th minute. The Cowgirls earned a free kick from a CCU red card and almost made good, but were only able to hit the post. The game remained tied at 1-1 and went into double overtime.
The Cowgirls continued the attack in the second overtime with the man advantage. They took three more shots while the Cougars managed a shot of their own. But the final horn sounded the end of the game with the score still tied, 1-1.
The Cowgirls' attack was non-stop in the game against the Cougars, they took 26 total shots to CCU's five.
Crystal Schuder ended the game with the only Cowgirl goal from four attempts.
Marci Johnson added an assist and five shots to the effort and
Kelsie Roberts was a constant threat with four of seven shots on goal.
Despite the offensive onslaught, the Cowgirls were disappointed to only come away with the single goal. “We need to get the ball into the net,” said Assistant Coach
Nelvin Wilson. “We created chances but we can't put the ball away.”
Coach Wilson noted the outstanding effort of the Cougars' goalkeeper in keeping the game tied up. “Their keeper played great, she came-up big when her team really needed her.”
The Cowgirls' defense dominated CCU in Lakewood. They only allowed three of the Cougar's five shots to reach Cowgirl keeper
Nikita Rivera.
Lisa Clausen and
Autumn Woods were a big part of the Cowgirls not allowing the Cougars to mount any consistent attacking threat.
The Cowgirls are sitting in seventh place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, just six points shy of the final conference playoff spot. Last year's team made a late surge in the final eight games to earn a spot in the RMAC post-season.
The Cowgirls will continue conference play on Friday, 10/12, when they return home to host the Rangers of Regis University in Las Vegas, N.M. Regis is currently in fourth place in the RMAC with a 5-2-1 conference record and 7-4-1 in overall play. The game on is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. If you can't make it out to Perkins Stadium to watch the Cowgirls in action, you can click
