The NMHU Cowboys continued their winning ways in the University of Texas-Permian Basin Tournament on 2/11 as they defeated in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University 8-1. The win over the Greyhounds will be the Pokes final of the weekend as the remainder of the tournament has been cancelled due to extreme weather. Much like the Tarleton game, the Cowboys would find a way to win late as they would trail 1-0 after the third inning. In the fourth inning,
AJ Alexander would score the first run for the Pokes off a
Robbie Ingram ground out putting Alexander across the plate to knot the score up at one run apiece. Both teams would remain scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings. The Cowboys bats would then awaken in the seventh and eighth innings scoring seven unanswered runs en route to their 8-1 win over ENMU. With the win, the Cowboys are now 2-0 on the season.
Ray Torres (1-0) would get the win for the Cowboys on the mound. Torres would allow one run on three hits in six inning of work while striking out five ENMU batters.
Jason Sirak came in for Torres in the seventh inning and allowed no runs and one hit while striking out three batters in three innings pitched earning his first save of the season. Over the weekend the Cowboys pitching staff as a whole racked up 22 total strikeouts.
AJ Alexander led the way for the Cowboys offensively finishing the day 4-5 with two runs scored and one double. Alexander's double would set up the Cowboys first score of the game sparking the scoring frenzy by the Pokes later in the game. Alexander also stole one base for the game.
Jordan Chavez finished second in overall offensive output for the Pokes against ENMU. Chavez finished the day 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
Rounding out the top three performers for the Cowboys was
Erik Scott finishing the day going 2-4 with two RBI's and one triple.
The Cowboys will return home early due to the cancellation of the rest of the UTPB Tournament but will not be in Las Vegas for long as they hit the road once again to take on their next opponents. The Cowboys will travel to Hobbs, N.M. to take part in the University of the Southwest Tournament on 2/17-2/19. The Cowboys will play Eastern New Mexico University for one game at the tournament followed by a three game series with tournament host the University of the Southwest.
