Cowboys Kennel Greyhounds 10-7

The NMHU Cowboys completed their trip to Hobbs, N.M. with a 10-7 win over in-state rival Eastern New Mexico on 2/19. The Pokes finish the weekend with an overall record of 3-1 with two wins over the University of the Southwest (14-1; 11-4) and a split with Eastern New Mexico falling in their first game on 2/18 14-7 and defeating the Greyhounds on 2/19. With the win, the Cowboys are now 5-1 on the season.

The Cowboys and the Greyhounds started off in a deadlock as neither team would score a run for the first three innings. The Pokes would draw first blood scoring two runs in the fourth inning off an RBI single by AJ Alexander and an RBI sacrifice fly by Justin Rodriguez to make it 2-0 Cowboys leading going into the bottom of the fourth inning. ENMU would score one run to pull within one 2-1. In the fifth inning the Pokes would score another run to increase their lead 3-1. The Greyhounds bats would come alive in the bottom of the fifth as ENMU would hang four runs off of three hits and one Cowboy error to take the lead 5-3. The Cowboys and the Greyhounds would each score one run in the sixth inning to make the score 6-4 going into the seventh inning. In the seventh inning, the Pokes bats would awaken as they would put together a five run inning on three hits and one ENMU error to pull away from the Greyhounds 9-6. After their big offensive inning, NMHU pitcher, Oscar Almeida would come in for the Cowboys in the bottom of the seventh inning and shut down the Greyhounds for the final three innings holding them to one run on two hits to take the Cowboys to their fifth win of the season 10-7.

Getting the start on the mound for the Cowboys was Jason Sirak. Sirak finished the day allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out three ENMU batters in five innings pitched. Gavin Hite (1-0) would get the win for the Pokes as he came in for Sirak in the sixth inning and allowed one run on no hits with three batters walked. Oscar Almeida got the save for the Cowboys as he shut down the ENMU offensive attack holding the Greyhounds to just one run on two hits while striking three batters in three innings pitched.

Robbie Ingram led the way for the Cowboys finishing the day 2-4 with one run scored and three RBI's. Justin Rodriguez would finish the game 1-3 with one run scored and two RBI's. Rounding out the top three performers for the Pokes was Matt Gualco. Gualco finished 2-5 with two RBI's.

The Cowboys will continue their road warrior schedule as the Pokes travel to Portales, N.M on 2/28 to take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico before they start RMAC play against Regis University on 3/3 in Denver, Colo.
