The Highlands baseball team improved to 6-1 overall on 2/28 while on the road at Eastern New Mexico University. Coach Jones' squad kenneled the Greyhounds (6-4) 14-10, despite 50+ miles per hour wind and tornados of dirt. As Mother Nature had gone awry, Highlands continued to keep pressure on Eastern with a solo home run in the first by
Clay Mohr and a five run second inning.
Eastern handed Highlands their first loss of the season in a 14-7 decision on 2/18.
Jason Sirak started on the hill for the 'Pokes but was pulled when the southpaw faced 20 batters, 59 pitches and gave up seven. As Sirak was pulled,
Nicasio Gonzalez took the mound next and left with the lead in the fifth earning his first win of the season.
Highlands played the wind to their advantage offensively as they kept the ball in the air to confuse the Eastern defense. The fifth inning was controlled entirely by the visitor who tacked on another seven runs on five hits and one error.
Josh McMahon led the Cowboys hitting two for two with four RBI's and a walk.
Luis Saenz was close behind as he hit two for three and scored both times he got on base. Mohr was leading the Cowboys with a two for three at bat including a home run, and three RBI's until an injury prevented him from finishing the day.
“I'm just glad to get out of there with a win with the conditions,” said Head Coach
Steve Jones. “I felt bad for our pitchers who performed so well under those circumstances.“
Highlands travels to Regis University to open RMAC play on 3/3-3/5.
