Cowboys Sweep Cougars in Day One Action

#31 Clay Mohr
The NMHU Cowboys swept the Cougars of Colorado Christian University in day one action of their four game series. The Cowboys defeated the Cougars in game one 20-0 and continued to pour it on as they defeated CCU 7-3 in game two on 3/16 in Las Vegas, N.M. With their set of wins the Pokes are now 15-3 on the season and 9-1 in RMAC play. The Cowboys and the Cougars conclude their series with a double header on 3/17 in Las Vegas, N.M.

“Today was a great day for us as a whole. We have talked about getting good pitching, good defense and good hitting. We got all three of those today,” said NMHU Head Coach Steve Jones following his Cowboys two game sweep of Colorado Christian on 3/16.

In game one the Cowboys dominated the Cougars hitting .486 as a team. The Cowboys hammered in 20 runs on 18 hits with three doubles for the game. With all of their offensive output, the Cowboys were very patient at the plate drawing 13 walks in the game. Clay Mohr led the way for the Pokes in game one finishing a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored, three RBI's and one double. Josh McMahon finished 3-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Derek Ward rounds out the top three in game one going 2-4 with one runs scored and four RBI's.

Greg Fowler (4-1) was the story of the day for the Cowboys on the mound. Fowler held the Cougars scoreless on just five hits while striking out six batters in seven innings pitched. Nicasio Gonzalez followed suit holding the Cougars scoreless on two hits and striking out one CCU batter in two innings pitched. In game one, the Cowboys pitching staff did not walk a single batter.

In game two the Cougars drew first blood scoring one run in the first inning and also held the Cowboys scoreless through the first two innings. CCU increased their lead 2-0 scoring one run in the third inning. After falling behind 2-0, the Cowboys came alive in the third inning scoring six runs to take a commanding 6-2 lead. The Cougars didn't lay down as they mounted a small comeback in the fourth inning soring one run to pull as close as 3-6, but that would be as close to the Cowboys as they would get. The Cowboys scored one run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-3 and cruise to their fifteenth win of the season.

Clay Mohr continued his perfect day in game two finishing 2-2 with two runs scored, two RBI's and one triple. Josh McMahon followed pace with Mohr in game two finishing 2-2 with one run scored. AJ Alexander rounds out the top three for game two finishing 1-3 with one run scored and one double.

Eric Maupin got the start on the mound for the Cowboys in game two. Maupin finished the game allowing three runs on six hits in three and two-third innings pitched. Jason Sirak (1-0) would come in for relief of Maupin and shutdown the Cougars holding them hitless and racking up four strikeouts in three and one-third innings pitched to earn his first win of the season.

The Cowboys will conclude their four game series with CCU on 3/17 with a double header starting at 12:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M.
