The diamond Cowboys (17-3, 11-1 RMAC) completed their sweep of Colorado Christian University (3-17, 2-10 RMAC) on 3/17 with a pair of hard-earned wins; 19-10 and 10-3. Both teams went through eight pitchers apiece.
The first half of the double header was the nine-inning game that was won in the Highlands third inning. Both
Thomas King and
Josh McMahon walked, and then a bunt from
Jarod Jamerson loaded the bases. CCU's pitcher, Marshall Crawford, walked the next two batters scoring two.
Clay Mohr's centerfield single scored two. At the end of the third, Highlands scored six runs on three hits.
Oscar Almeida improved his record to 2-0 with a win in the first game and earned his fourth save of the season in the second outing.
Ray Torres started game two strong fanning six, more than the other entire pitchers combined, and only one walk. Highlands notched eight runs in the middle three innings and had a seemingly comfortable 10-4 lead going into the eighth inning. The Cowboys got too comfortable with their lead since the pitching faltered when three batters were walked which led to a six run inning.
Highlands did not have to work too hard for their nine runs in the bottom of the eighth since CCU walked eight batters and plunked one. Between the walks, Highlands capitalized on a couple passed balls and base stealing opportunities.
Kyle Davis also singled to right for 2 RBI's.
“I thought we had a great weekend and we are definitely looking to carry the momentum into Tuesday's game,” commented Head Coach
Steve Jones. “The eighth inning was a little scary but I had enough confidence in my team that they would pull it off.”
