#18 Cowboys Drop Three to CSU-Pueblo

The #18 NMHU Cowboys dropped the first three games of their four game series with RMAC foe, the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo. The Pokes fell in game one 8-4 on 3/23 and the woes would continue for NMHU on 3/24 as the Cowboys fell in both games 10-3 and 7-0. The Cowboys look to right the ship and take one from CSU-Pueblo in the series finale on 3/25 in Pueblo, Colo.

In game one, the Cowboys fell behind early to the ThunderWolves 5-1 after the first three innings played. The Pokes mounted a comeback scoring three more runs over the fourth and fifth innings making it 5-4, but that would be as close as the Cowboys would get to CSU-Pueblo as the ThunderWolves scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take it to the eventual final score of 8-4.

Eric Maupin led the Cowboys offensively in game one finishing 3-5 with one run scored and one double. Clay Mohr added in to the offensive production for the Pokes finishing 2-3 with one run scored, one RBI and one triple for the game.

Greg Fowler (4-2) got the start for the Cowboys in game one. Fowler allowed five earned runs on seven hits while striking out ten batters in six and one-third innings pitched. Despite the high strikeout total, Fowler was credited with the loss for the Pokes. Jason Sirak came in for relief of Fowler and allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one CSU-Pueblo batter in one and two-third innings pitched.

In game two of the series the Cowboys fell in a hole early 8-0 as the ThunderWolves hung eight runs on the Pokes in the bottom of the first inning. The ThunderWolves added in one run in second inning and another run in the fifth inning to pull ahead 10-0 going into the sixth inning. In the sixth inning the Cowboys scored three runs, but that wouldn't be enough as the ThunderWolves shocked the #18 Cowboys 10-3 to take the first two games of the series. Kyle Davis was the lone Cowboys with an extra base hit for game two. Davis finished the game 1-4 with one run scored, one RBI and a homerun. Erik Scott added to the Cowboys run total going 1-1 with one RBI.

Ray Torres (3-1) got the start on the mound for the Pokes. Torres struggled on the mound against the ThunderWolves, allowing six runs on six hits in two-thirds of an inning pitch earning the loss for NMHU. Gavin Hite came in for relief of Torres and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out six batters in four innings pitched. Nicasio Gonzalez finished off the game for the Pokes holding the ThunderWolves scoreless on one hit and striking out one batter in one and one-third innings pitched.

Game three was more of the same for the Cowboys as they continued to struggle. The ThunderWolves held the Pokes scoreless in game three en route to a 7-0 CSU-Pueblo win. The Cowboys finished game three 4-24 for a .166 team batting average.

Eric Maupin (1-1) got the start on the mound for the Cowboys. Maupin allowed seven runs on 10 hits and struck out six CSU-Pueblo batters in four and one-third innings pitched. Mike McDermott came in for relief of Maupin and held the ThunderWolves scoreless while allowing one hit and striking out two ThunderWolf batters in one and two-third innings pitched.

The Cowboys will take the field against the ThunderWolves on 3/25 for the series finale of their four game series on 3/25 in Pueblo, Colo. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
