Cowboys Outlast #23 Colorado Mesa 11-10

In a battle of RMAC powerhouse programs, the NMHU Cowboys came out on top against the nationally ranked #23 Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University 11-10 on 3/30 in Las Vegas, N.M. The Pokes rode a late offensive surge scoring seven runs in the last three innings to overcome a very talented CMU squad. With the win, the Cowboys improve to 19-7 on the season and 12-5 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will continue their four game series with a doubleheader against CMU on 3/31 in Las Vegas, N.M.

CMU jumped ahead of the Cowboys early scoring four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Pokes answered right back in the bottom of the second inning scoring three runs of their own with back-to-back homeruns from Kyle Davis and Chris Pile. Davis scored Luis Saenz on the homerun, while Pile hit a solo shot over the right field fence. The Cowboys would then hold the Mavericks scoreless in the third inning and score one run in the half of the inning as Thomas King scored on a Luis Saenz sacrifice fly to tie the ball game up at 4-4. Both teams finished the fourth inning scoreless, and then in the fifth the Mavericks took the lead after a two run top of the fifth. The Cowboys would struggle in the fifth inning going scoreless. After the fifth inning the Cowboys bats caught fire as they scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead over the Mavericks. Each team would score two runs in the seventh and eighth innings making the score 11-10 going into the ninth inning with the Cowboys in the lead. Oscar Almeida, who came in for the Cowboys in the seventh inning, faced five batters in the ninth inning and forced three CMU fly-outs to secure the win for the Cowboys.

Jason Sirak got the start on the mound for the Cowboys. Sirak allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out three CMU batters in four and one-third innings pitched. David Saiz came in for relief of Sirak and held the Mavericks to three runs on four hits while striking out one batter in three innings pitched. Oscar Almeida (3-0) got the win on the mound for the Pokes late in the game. Almeida allowed one run on one hit in one and two-third innings pitched.

Offensive leaders for the Pokes include Kyle Davis, Eric Maupin and Josh McMahon. Davis finished the day 2-5 with two runs scored, three RBI's and a homerun. Davis' homerun lit the Cowboys fire scoring the first NMHU runs of the day. Maupin finished 2-4 with one run scored and two RBI's. McMahon rounds out the top three NMHU performers going 3-4 with two RBI's and two doubles.

The Cowboys will look to continue their winning ways as they continue their series with CMU on 3/31 with a doubleheader in day two action in Las Vegas, N.M. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
