The diamond Cowboys split in day two of action against RMAC rival #23 Colorado Mesa University. The Cowboys took game one 8-6 but fell in the second 9-3. Highlands had a combined 22 hits on the day. Highlands improved their record to 20-8 (13-6 RMAC) and the Mavericks are now 20-9 (14-5 RMAC).
Highlands took an early lead in the first game scoring seven in the first three innings before the Mavericks could mark one in the fourth.
Matt Gualco pitched five for the 'Pokes and fanned six. While Gualco earned the win, Highlands went through four pitchers in the first game, including
Mike McDermott,
Eric Maupin and
Oscar Almeida, who earned his sixth save on the year.
Outfielder
Jordan Chavez hit three-for-four with two runs and one RBI in game one and was assisted by
Josh McMahon who hit two-for-three with two runs.
Maverick's pitcher Derek Evans, who marked six K's and only walked one, controlled game two.
Chris Prokupek struck out three but only lasted 5.2 for the 'Pokes. Prokupek falls to 3-3 and Evans improves to 3-0.
Gualco started off the Cowboy's sixth with a single up the middle followed by a single from
Luis Saenz. Both runners advanced on a passed ball from Evans. Maupin knocked in both Saenz and Gualco with a single to center field.
Chris Pile got on with a poke to left field putting Maupin in scoring position. Again, the Cowboys received a gift with another passed ball by the Mavericks pitching staff. The Highlands scoring drive ended when McMahon singled and drove in Maupin.
The Cowboys finish the series on 4/1 at noon in Las Vegas, N.M.
